Abstract
Development of a highly selective optical sensor for determining Fe³⁺in water samples has been reported. The optical sensor was prepared through immobilizing Deferoxamine as a proper ionophore on a transparent agarose film. . A distinct color change, from white to brick red, was observed by contacting the sensing membrane with Fe³⁺ ions at pH 2. The effects of pH, ionic strength and reaction time were studied.

No significant interference from 100 times concentrations of a number of potentially interfering ions was detected for the Fe³⁺ ion determination. The optical sensor was successfully applied to the determination of Fe³⁺ in spiked water samples. The prepared sensor is repeatable and the relative standard deviation of 0.49% was calculated. The limit of detection (LOD) of the method was calculated 1.14×10-7.

There was a linear relationship between the Fe³⁺ concentrations and membrane absorbance at 350 nm The equation A = 14507C + 0.017 has a linear fit with an R² of 0.994.
